Don't Get Racked: Essential Tips for Warehouse Racking Safety

Warehouse racking holds your inventory, keeps your operations running smoothly, and makes efficient use of space. But forget safety, and those towering metal structures can quickly become a liability.

Accidents involving storage racks can lead to serious injuries, product damage, and costly downtime. Fortunately, prioritizing safety practices can prevent these risks and ensure everyone in your warehouse stays safe.

Building a Solid Foundation:

  • Planning is Key: Before installing any racking, carefully plan your layout considering product weight, access needs, and forklift traffic flow. Don't underestimate the importance of a well-designed system.
  • Expert Installation: Trusting the job to trained professionals ensures your racking is assembled correctly and meets all safety standards. All of our installation teams are SEIRS (Storage Equipment Installers Registration Scheme) certified, so you can be assured that you are dealing with a competent company that is regularly audited by an independent and external process.
  • Regular Inspections: Don't let your guard down after installation. Schedule regular inspections by qualified personnel to identify and address any damage or wear before it becomes a problem. As a SEMA  approved Distributor,  we advocate a rigorous approach to rack inspection, maintenance and repair through a regime of (typically) daily, weekly and annual (expert) inspections. The three main reasons for an inspection are to check the condition of the equipment, ensure it complies with legal requirements and to verify that the equipment has been installed correctly.
  • Annual Inspection: As mentioned above, expert annual inspections should be carried out, preferably by a SEMA Approved Racking Inspector (SARI), who are highly qualified professionals. We offer SARI inspections, in which we can offer highly comprehensive reports and recommendations to ensure you racking is safe.

Safe Handling: The Racking Rules:

  • Know Your Limits: Every rack has a weight capacity. Understand these limits and never overload shelves, even if "it just fits."
  • Label Clearly: Clearly label each bay and shelf with weight capacity and product information. This helps prevent overloading and makes locating specific items easier.
  • Forklift Safety First: Train operators on proper forklift handling techniques, including safe manoeuvring around and near racking structures.
  • No Climbing Allowed: Racks are not ladders! Climbing on racking for any reason is strictly prohibited. Provide safe alternatives for accessing high shelves.
  • Damage Control: Report any damage to racking immediately. Don't store products on damaged shelves until they are repaired or replaced.

Additional Gear Up:

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Ensure workers wear appropriate PPE, including steel-toed boots, hard hats, and safety glasses, depending on the specific tasks and risks involved.
  • Warehouse Visibility: Proper lighting and clear pathways are crucial for avoiding collisions and ensuring safe navigation within the warehouse.
  • Signage and Communication: Use clear signage to mark designated pathways, weight restrictions, and safety protocols. Regular training and communication about racking safety are vital.

SEMA

We always recommend using SEMA approved for all of your racking and storage requirements.

The SEMA Distributor Company (SDC) qualification indicates that a company is dedicated to  the supply of quality storage equipment. To become part of the SEMA Distributor Group (SDG) the company must demonstrate a high level of commitment to safety standards, work to industry codes of practice and be regulated by a random audit.

Cutting corners on rack safety could cost you much more in the long run. We strongly advise you use a SEMA approved company for any racking purchases or installations. All of our installation teams are SEIRS (Storage Equipment Installers Registration Scheme) certified, so you can be assured that you are dealing with a competent company that is regularly audited by an independent and external process.
